Day 17 – Black History – Kendrick Lamar Pulitzer Prize Winner!

If you watched the Super Bowl halftime show last Sunday, you probably saw this “woke rapper” perform on the field.

In 2004, 17-year Compton, CA native, Kendrick Lamar began his music career by releasing a series of mixtapes under the rap name K-Dot. Kendrick’s lyrical skills has been plainly evident by his countless Grammys, AMAs, BET, and NAACP Awards, since.

But with the Pulitzer Prize in Music given to Lamar for his 2017 album DAMN., his exceptionalism is now officially historic! It’s the first time in the prize’s history that it has been given to an artist outside of classical or jazz music.

The Pulitzer Committee called Kendrick Lamar’s work “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life. “

An actual Pulitzer Prize for rap music historic!
