⚛️Attraction can draw you toward someone, but it should never make decisions for you. Chemistry may be immediate and powerful, but it’s often short-lived and it’s not a determination of character.
This applies to the people we choose as partners, friends, colleagues, business associates—and, of course, lovers.
When emotions run high, it is easy to move too quickly. Slow down. Pay attention. Let wisdom guide what attraction begins.
Here’s a simple strategy to remember:
- Observe.
Watch how people interact with you and others. Notice how they treat family, friends, strangers, servers, coworkers, and people who cannot benefit them. Are they kind to others and emotionally intelligent?
Pay attention to how they respond to disappointment, conflict, correction, boundaries, and being told “no.” People reveal themselves through patterns, not just promises.
- Ask.
Take responsibility for asking meaningful questions. Ask about their past, including what happened in previous relationships, friendships, or partnerships and why they ended.
Ask what they learned and what they would do differently. Do not be afraid of honest conversations. You deserve truthful answers, and they should ask questions of you, too.
You cannot make wise decisions about someone you have not taken the time to know.
- Assess.
After observing and asking questions, pause and reflect.
Based on what I have seen and what this person has told me, do I feel comfortable moving forward with this relationship or partnership?
Do their actions align with their words? Do their values align with mine? Do I feel respected, safe, and emotionally at peace?
Or do I need more time to observe and ask?
You do not have to move forward simply because the attraction is strong. Slow roll the new relationship.
- Invest.
Investment is the final step: deciding whether you are willing to share your time, energy, resources, experiences, body, mind, and world with this person.
You begin to trust them with greater access to you—not because you are desperate for connection, but because they have shown themselves worthy of it.
Investing does not mean abandoning your boundaries. It means guiding yourself with wisdom, intention, and confidence.
Choose your partners wisely. Choose your friends wisely. Choose your colleagues and collaborators wisely. Choose investors wisely. Choose your lovers wisely.
Not everyone deserves access to the most valuable parts of you.
Observe. Ask. Assess. Then invest. #OAAI
Pick wisely friends…you can do it!
