(Lost blog from 2023)
This kind of detox and weight-loss plan is right up my alley: eat as much as you want of something you actually enjoy—and still lose weight? I’m in. Simple as that.
After a summer of BBQs and Labor Day indulgence, I was feeling sluggish and a little over my comfort zone. My body was practically begging for something green. That’s when it hit me—why not detox with southern-style greens? Yes, greens—turnip, mustard, and collard. My cravings led the way, and my body said, “thank you.”
Greens are a southern staple and a nutritional powerhouse. They’re packed with antioxidants like beta carotene (great for your skin and for lowering diabetes risk), and full of B vitamins—thiamine (B1), niacin (B3), and pyridoxine (B6).
“These greens are very nutrient dense,” says dietitian Daphne Olivier. They’re loaded with fat-soluble vitamins A and K, and serve as a solid non-dairy source of calcium. Plus, they contain phytonutrients that boost liver function—a natural detox bonus.

Week 1: The Green Routine
I mixed turnip and mustard greens, slow-cooked with smoked pork until the lean meat fell off the bone. With that perfect smoky flavor and seasoning, I ate greens at least twice a day—sometimes three—for five full days. Occasionally I’d have a boiled egg for protein, but honestly, I never got tired of the greens. I’d eat them for breakfast too (many cultures do).
By the end of that week, despite being busy and mostly sedentary, I was down about 3–4 pounds—and feeling lighter, cleaner, and surprisingly energized. No exercise. Just greens. Okay, okay—I did cheat a little. I treated myself to a couple of my favorite ice cream drumsticks. But even so, week two delivered the same results—another 3–4 pounds gone. Ka-ching!
All told, I dropped around eight pounds and hit a number on the scale I hadn’t seen since last year. No joke—stubborn fat, gone. I’m now in week three of my “greens journey,” with short breaks on weekends to reset.

My Secret Seasoning Mix
There are a ton of southern greens recipes out there, but here’s my go-to flavor base:
- 2 packets of Goya Ham Flavoring
- Powdered roasted garlic
- Smoked paprika
- Seasoned salt (your favorite brand)
- A palmful of crushed red pepper
- Black pepper to taste
Even with smoked meat, the Goya packets really bring that deep southern flavor home.
So there you have it—my southern greens detox. Flavorful, filling, and surprisingly slimming. Sometimes, your body really does know what it needs.
