Mardi Gras Indians: Black cultural groups inspired by and honoring Native peoples through art, music, and resistance.
Christopher Columbus is often credited with “discovering” America in 1492—but this popular narrative isn’t true! Let’s dig into the facts to understand the fuller story.
🌍 Indigenous Peoples Were Already Here
Long before Columbus set sail, the Americas were home to diverse Indigenous peoples with rich cultures, languages, and histories. In Mesoamerica and South America, civilizations like the Maya, Aztec, and Inca thrived.
In North America, groups such as the Iroquois, Cherokee, and Sioux had established complex societies with intricate social structures and governance systems.

Columbus’s Voyages
Born in Genoa, Italy, Columbus sailed under the Spanish flag and embarked on his first voyage in 1492, aiming to find a westward route to Asia. Instead, he landed in the Caribbean, believing he had reached islands off the coast of Asia and mistakenly calling them the “West Indies.”
Over the next decade, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic, exploring parts of the Caribbean and Central America—but never set foot in North America.
Leif Erikson: The First Known European in North America
While Columbus’s journeys were historically significant, he was not the first European in the Americas. Around the year 1000, Norse explorer Leif Erikson sailed from Greenland to what is now Newfoundland, Canada, establishing a settlement called Vinland—making him the first known European to reach North American soil (Britannica, 2025; Wikipedia, 2025).
Governance and Controversy
Columbus was appointed Governor of Hispaniola (modern-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic). His rule was marked by harsh treatment of Indigenous people and Spanish settlers alike, leading to numerous complaints sent to Spain.
Ultimately, he was stripped of his governorship and sent back to Spain in chains.
Reexamining Columbus Day
Columbus’s legacy is complex. While he opened the Americas to European exploration, his expeditions also introduced violence, enslavement, and colonization, with devastating consequences for Indigenous populations.
In recent years, there has been a growing movement to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor the histories and contributions of Native communities.
Yet, on October 9, 2025, President Donald Trump reaffirmed Columbus Day as a federal holiday for October 13, 2025. He described Columbus as “the original American hero” and criticized efforts to reassess his legacy, particularly by what he called “left-wing radicals” aiming to remove statues and reframe history.
We should be careful who we call an “American hero.”
