Ten Things to Unlearn Now!

Many of the lessons people were taught in older generations were about survival, not thriving, and they often carried silence, shame, or harm. I know; I was born on the cusp of being a Boomer and a Gen Xers – I’m still unlearning.
Here’s a starting list of things “we” need to unlearn (especially generational teachings).
SEE if you can ADD to the list?!

🌿 Things to Unlearn
1. “What happens in this house stays in this house.”
→ Silence around abuse, addiction, or trauma protects the abuser, not the victim.
2. “Spousal abuse is private business.”
→ Abuse is never private—it’s violence, and it demands accountability and protection.
3. “Children should be seen and not heard.”
→ Kids deserve to be listened to, respected, and taught that their voice matters.
4. “Boys don’t cry” / “Girls should be quiet and nice.”
→ Emotions are human, not gendered. Suppressing them causes lifelong harm.
5. “You must get &
stay married no matter what.”
→ Staying in harmful, toxic, or abusive relationships is not noble—it’s dangerous.
6. “Discipline = fear.”
→ Beating or harsh punishment doesn’t equal love or respect—it teaches fear, not values.
7. “Don’t air your dirty laundry.”
→ Speaking truth, seeking help, and breaking silence is how healing begins.
8. “Suffering is normal.”
→ No, suffering is not the price of love, loyalty, or respect.
9. “Mental health struggles are weakness.”
→ Therapy, vulnerability, and support are strength. Silence is what weakens us.
10. “You owe family your loyalty, no matter what.”
→ Loyalty doesn’t excuse abuse, neglect, or mistreatment. Boundaries are 💗 love!
