Ava DuVernay – Creator of Queen Sugar breaks Records!

Director, producer, screenwriter is why
she’s extraordinary. With films like 13th, Selma, and A Wrinkle in Time (starring our very own Oprah), Ava is top rated.

DuVernay has made it a point to put representation at the forefront of her critically acclaimed work. She has also racked up countless firsts: the first Black woman to win the Best Directing Award at Sundance in 2012; the first Black woman to get a Best Director Golden Globe nomination; the first woman of color to direct an Oscar-nominated Best Picture film; and the first woman to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million domestically.

Ava DuVernay, a pathbreaking filmmaker known for projects that give voice to women and people of color, is widely seen as a champion for representation and justice!

Tena Lawyer is a retired U.S. Army intelligence professional that began her career mentoring, coaching and training while in the U.S. Army. She served as a Director and Deputy Director, respectively, of Education & Training in a DoD organizations where she managed the staff of instructors, curriculum developers, and learning facilitators. She taught analytical & critical thinking skills, basic instructor training, unconscious bias training, and peer-to-peer training & development. Currently, Tena is a substitute teacher in Palm Beach County, Florida and a student pursuing a PhD in Global Training and Development. She is passionate about education & training, coaching, mentoring and consulting.
