American Beach

Road trip to see an Army battle buddy. And to check out yet another historic location on my list- American Beach, Amelia Island.

In the early 1930s, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, the owner of Afro American Insurance Company, founded American Beach. Located on Amelia Island, north of Jacksonville, this beach was first intended for Lewis’s employees, and it served as one of the few Florida beaches open to African-Americans during segregation.

I saw the biggest sand dunes of my life. Amazing! I can only imagine life on the island. Close knit community. Meet-ups at Evans Rendezvous. Sitting on the porch looking at the ocean. Not to mention, the excitement buzzing around Greg and Julia streets when a big musical act was coming to perform right at Evans joint. I can feel it!
